Connect Mac to Netgear Wireless Router

Connect Mac to Netgear Wireless Router

Wired Setup:

  • Take an Ethernet cable and plug one end of it into the LAN port of the Netgear router.
  • Connect the other end to the Mac computer’s network port.
  • Turn on the Mac computer.
  • If your Mac computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, then make use of a USB to Ethernet or Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to establish the connection.
  • Connect the power adapter of the router to an electrical outlet and power up the router.
  • Wait until the router’s light turns solid white or green.
  • On your Mac computer, check whether you are connected to the internet. Usually, when the Mac is connected to the router with an Ethernet cable, it will be connected to the internet automatically.
  • If your Mac is not connected, then click the Apple menu, select System Preferences and then click the Network icon.
  • In the Network window that opens, click the Ethernet tab on the left panel.
  • Now, in the main window, click the Configure IPv4 menu and set it to Using DHCP to obtain the IP address automatically.
  • Click the OK button. Now you successfully connect Mac to Netgear wireless router.

Wireless Setup:

  • Turn on the Mac computer and the Netgear router first.
  • Next, identify the network name, type of wireless security, and security key of your Netgear router.
  • On your Mac, click the Apple menu available at the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select the System Preferences option from the drop-down menu.
  • In the System Preferences window, go to the Internet & Wireless section.
  • Next, click the Network icon to open the Network window.
  • Select AirPort from the left-side panel and check whether the Status indicates ‘On’ in the right-side window.
  • If it is turned off, click the Turn Wi-Fi On button.
  • Ensure that you have enabled the Show Wi-Fi status in menu bar checkbox.
  • Click the Network Name field and enter the SSID of your Netgear router.
  • After selecting the SSID, enter the network key in the required field.
  • Wait until the Mac computer detects and verifies the wireless network.

Connect Mac To Netgear Wireless Router Using Web Interface

  • After connecting the Netgear wireless router to your Mac, open the default browser and enter the router’s IP address in the URL field.
  • You can identify the router’s IP address from the label attached to the backside of the Netgear router.
  • Otherwise, open the System Preferences window from the Apple menu.
  • Next, click on the Network icon to open the Network window.
  • Click the Advanced button to identify the router’s IP address.
  • After entering the router’s IP address in the URL field, press the Enter key and enter the default username and password if you are setting up the Netgear router for the first time.
  • Click the Advanced tab and select Setup Wizard.
  • Click the Yes button followed by Next.
  • When the router detects the Internet connection, enter a new login password and answer two security questions.
  • Click Next and update the router’s firmware if necessary.
  • Restart your Netgear router and log in to the router’s web interface with the newly created password.
