How To Add Second Router To Increase Range?

Here's how to add second router to increase range and your primary router as a repeater or Wi-Fi extender to increase the network range. To do so, follow the below-mentioned steps.

  • Step 1 :Before starting, you have to identify the network details such as wireless SSID, channel, and security type.
  • Step 2 :To do so, connect your primary router to the computer using a standard Ethernet cable.
  • Step 3 :Alternatively, you can connect your Windows computer wirelessly to your primary router.
  • Step 4 :Next, click the Network icon at the system tray and select the Network and Internet settings option.
  • Step 5 :Click on Change adaptor settings and give a right-click on your network adapter.
  • Step 6 :Select the Status option and click the Details button.
  • Step 7 :This will display the default gateway (router’s IP address) and the computer’s IP address.
  • Step 8 :Close all the running programs and open the default browser.
  • Step 9 :Enter the router’s IP address in the URL field and press the Enter key to access the login portal.
  • Step 10 :Enter your login credentials in the required fields and click the Login button to access your primary router’s settings page.
  • Step 11 :On the router’s settings page, check the wireless channel, security type, and SSID.
  • Step 12 :Enable the DHCP option to assign the IP address automatically for the secondary router.
  • Step 13 :Do not change any other settings on your primary router.
  • Step 14 :Disconnect your computer from the primary router’s wireless network temporarily.
  • Step 15 :Connect it to the second router’s wireless network.
  • Step 16 :Before connecting, make sure that you have reset the router’s network settings to the factory defaults (if it is already used).
  • Step 17 :Once you have connected the Windows computer to the secondary router’s wireless network, open the default browser and access the router’s settings page.
  • Step 18 :Navigate to Wireless settings and change the wireless channel, SSID, and security type.
  • Step 19 :The password should be the same as the primary router.
  • Step 20 :Disable the DHCP option and assign a fixed IP address.
