How To Configure PPTP Settings On Router?

Point-to-Point Protocol (PPTP) is a VPN protocol that can be tunneled through an IP network. Besides, you can create a VPN connection for a remote device. It uses the TCP port 1723 using encrypted data with Generic router encapsulation (GRE). If you wish to configure the PPTP settings on router, follow the steps given below.

Steps To Follow

  • Step 1:Before starting, verify and ensure that you have properly connected your computer to the router.
  • Step 2:Launch the default browser on your computer and log in to your router’s settings page.
  • Step 3:If you are using the TP-Link router, click the Advanced tab and select VPN Server PPTP VPN.
  • Step 4:Check the Enable VPN Server checkbox on the PPTP VPN page.
  • Step 5:Before you enable VPN Server, make sure to assign a static IP address for the router’s WAN port and synchronize your system time with the Internet.
  • Step 6:On the PPTP VPN page, enter the range of IP addresses leased to the devices in the Client IP Address field.
  • Step 7:Click on Advanced and set your PPTP connection permission based on your wish. This will be a vital part to configure PPTP settings on router.
  • Step 8:Click Save and configure the PPTP VPN connection account for the remote device.
  • Step 9:If you are using the Linksys router, click the Configuration tab and select the VPN option from the left-side panel.
  • Step 10:Click the PPTP Server sub-menu and check the Enable PPTP Server checkbox.
  • Step 11:Set the IP address range for PPTP VPN clients and enter the PPTP connection username & password in the required fields.
  • Step 12:Next, click the Add to list button after entering the necessary details.
  • Step 13:Click Save and proceed to set up the PPTP connection on the Windows computer (remote device).
  • Step 14:Go to Network and Sharing Center in the Control Panel app and click on the Set up a new connection or network link.
  • Step 15:Select the Connect to a workplace option and click Next.
  • Step 16:Choose the Use my Internet connection (VPN) option and click the I’ll set up an Internet connection later button.
  • Step 17:In the Connect to a Workplace window, enter the router’s Internet address and destination name.
  • Step 18:Check the Allow other people to use this connection checkbox and click Next.
  • Step 19:Fill in the Username, Password, and Confirm Password fields and click the Create button.
