How To Detect Router Problems?

A Wi-Fi router is a network device that routes your Internet traffic to different devices connected to it. Troubleshooting your router determines the possible issues and helps you to resolve them. To know how to detect router problems, keep reading.

Step 1: Checking your router’s status lights

  • Step 1 :If your router is turned on, turn it off and unplug the power adapter from the electrical outlet.
  • Step 2 :Also, remove the Ethernet cables connected to it.
  • Step 3 :After a few minutes, reconnect the network cable from the Internet modem to your router’s WAN port.
  • Step 4 :Connect your router’s power adapter to an electrical outlet and turn it on.

  • Step 7 :If any of its lights are blinking, identify the cause and troubleshoot it.

Step 2: Ping your router

  • Step 1 :First, connect your router and computer using a standard Ethernet cable.
  • Step 2 :The Ethernet cable should be plugged into your router’s LAN port and computer’s Ethernet port.
  • Step 3 :On your Windows computer, click the Start menu and type ‘cmd’ in the search panel.
  • Step 4 :From the search result, right-click the Command Prompt app and select Run as administrator.
  • Step 5 :In the Command Prompt window, type ‘ipconfig’ and press the Enter key.
  • Step 6 :Navigate to the Default Gateway section and identify your router’s IP address.
  • Step 7 :Next, type ‘ping “IP address”’ and press the Enter key (replace the IP address with your router’s IP address).
  • Step 8 :When the Destination host unreachable or Request timed out message has appeared, you could find that your computer cannot be communicated with your router.

Step 3: Access your router’s web interface

  • Step 1 :On your computer, launch the default browser and enter your router’s IP address in the URL field.
  • Step 2 :Press the Enter key to access your router’s login portal.

  • Step 4 :Verify the configured settings and check if the WAN is enabled.
  • Step 5 :If prompted to update your router’s firmware, download the latest firmware from your router’s official site and install it.
