HOW TO HOOK UP MODEM AND ROUTER

Follow these guidelines to connect a modem and a router.

  • Step 1:Detach all the cables from the modem and router if you connected them earlier.
  • Step 2:Attach a DSL cable to the phone jack and splitter.
  • Step 3:Connect the DSL cable to one of the splitter’s output ports and the DSL port on your modem. Attach another DSL cable to the splitter’s output port and telephone. Attach an Ethernet cable to the modem’s Internet port and the router’s WAN port.
  • Step 4: Attach an Ethernet cable to any one of the four Ethernet ports on your router and the Ethernet port on your computer.
  • Step 5:Connect the networking devices to the power supply and wait until they initialize. 
  • Step 6:Go to Control Panel Network and Sharing Center Change adapter setting Right-click the wired connection icon and choose Properties from the list Double-click TCP/IPV4 Click the ‘Obtain IP address automatically’ and the ‘Obtain DNS server address automatically’ radio buttons Click OK.
  • Step 7:Return to Control Panel Network and Sharing Center Change adapter setting Right-click the wired connection icon and select Status from the list Click Details The IP default gateway mentioned on the screen is the router’s IP address.Paste it in the web browser’s address bar. Press Enter.
  • Step 8:Key in the username and password of your router and click Login. (For most routers, you need to enter ‘admin’ as the username and leave the password field blank.)
  • Step 9:The router’s EWS page loads. Click the LAN Settings tab on the router’s embedded web server page.
  • Step 10:Set the IP address to the default gateway address, i.e., if the default gateway was 192.168.1.4, set 192.168.1.4 as the IP address. Set 255.255.255.0 as the Subnet Mask. Click the 'DHCP server On' radio button.
  • Step 11:Set the IP Pool starting and ending addresses. For example, set them as 192.168.1.20 and 192.168.1.50. Click ‘Apply Changes.’
  • Step 12:The router reboots. Then, go to Control Panel Network and Sharing Center Change adapter settings Right-click Local Area Connection Properties Double-click TCP/IPV4. Click the ‘Use the following IP address’ and ‘Use the following DNS server address’ radio buttons.
  • Step 13:Set the IP address to ‘192.168.1.a,’ where a can be any number between 5 and 15. (For example, set it to 192.168.1.6.) Set 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask. Set ‘192.168.1.4’ as the default gateway and primary DNS addresses. Click OK.
  • Step 14:Enter ‘192.168.1.4’ in the address bar of the web browser and press Enter. Log into the router by entering your login credentials and clicking Log in. Click the Connection Type Tab. Choose PPPoE as the WAN connection type. Click Next.
  • Step 15:Key in the username and passphrase provided by your ISP in the WAN PPPoE page and click ‘Apply Changes.’ This connects the router-DSL modem connection procedure.
