How To Set Up A Dual Router Network?

By connecting two routers together, you can extend the range of a network. You can use an old router as your secondary router and connect it to the main router. When it comes to connecting two routers, you can prefer the LAN-to-LAN connection in order to extend the Wi-Fi range. If you choose the LAN-to-WAN connection, it creates a second network within your main network and you won’t be able to share files due to restrictions. Also, both networks will behave as individual networks. Carry out the steps to know how to set up a dual router network?

  • Step 1:Connect the main router to your modem using an Ethernet cable. Make sure to plug in the Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the router.
  • Step 2:Also, connect both the router and the modem to a power source.
  • Step 3:Connect your computer to the main router using another Ethernet cable.
  • Step 4:Go to the web-based setup page of the main router using its IP address.
  • Step 5:If you don’t know the IP address of the router, open Command Prompt on your computer.
  • Step 6:Type ipconfig and hit the Enter key. Locate the IP address in the Default Gateway section.
  • Step 7:If you are creating a LAN-to-WAN connection, you have to change the DHCP settings. You have to restrict the range of IP addresses to be assigned by the main router so that the secondary router can make use of the remaining IP addresses.
  • Step 8:For a LAN-to-LAN connection, leave the DHCP settings as default.
  • Step 9:Once you have configured the DHCP settings, disconnect the main router from the computer.
  • Step 10:Now, connect the second router to your computer and go to its web-based setup page.
  • Step 11:Alter the IP address such that it lies within the range of the main router. Also, make sure that the subnet mask of the secondary router matches the main router.
  • Step 12:Disable the UPnP option in the secondary router.
  • Step 13:Also, configure the DHCP server settings. For LAN-to-LAN connection, disable the DHCP settings in the secondary router.
  • Step 14:If you have two wireless routers, you have to set the channel values manually.
  • Step 15:Set the channel of the main router from 1 to 6 and set the secondary router channel up to 11.
