Optimize Router Settings For Speed

A network router that has a 5 GHz band will have a larger bandwidth and increased speed. Follow the ways to optimize router settings for speed given below to change the router settings to increase the internet speed on the router.

Finding the IP address of the router:

  • Step 1:You will need the IP address of the router to go to the web setup page of the router.
  • Step 2:Make sure to connect your computer to the wireless network to find the IP address of the router.
  • Step 3:On a Windows computer, press the Start button and go to Control Panel.
  • Step 4:Click ‘View network status and tasks’ in the Network and Internet section to optimize router settings for speed.
  • Step 5:Choose the type of network connection and click the Details tab in the General section.
  • Step 6:You can view the IP address of the router in the IPv4 Default Gateway section on Network Connection Details.
  • Step 7:Otherwise, press the Windows and R button together to open the Run dialog box. Type “cmd” in the search section, and press the Enter key.
  • Step 8:Type “ipconfig” in the Command Prompt window to get the IP address of the printer. 
  • Step 9:The IP address of the connected router will be available in the Default Gateway section.

  • Step 11:Click the Network icon and select the Wi-Fi option on the left panel.
  • Step 12:Navigate to the Advanced section and select the TCP/IP tab to optimize router settings for speed.
  • Step 13: Locate your IP address near the router section.

TP-Link router:

  • Step 1:Launch your browser and type the IP address of the router in the address bar. Then, press the Enter key.
  • Step 2:Log in to the router setup page using the username and password of the network.
  • Step 3:The default network credentials will be available on the router’s label.
  • Step 4:On the router’s page, select the Bandwidth Control tab on the left panel.
  • Step 5:In the Egress Bandwidth section, enter 10000 Kbps and type Ingress Bandwidth as 10000 Kbps.
  • Step 6:Checkmark the Enable Bandwidth Control option under Bandwidth Control Settings. Then, click on the Save button.
  • Step 7:Now, navigate to the Wireless tab and select the Wireless Advanced option from the displayed list.
  • Step 8:Set the Transmit Power to “High” and Beacon Interval as “1000.” Enter the RTS Threshold and Fragmentation Threshold as 2346. Chane DTIM Interval as “1.” 
  • Step 9:Checkmark the Enable WMM and Enable Short GI options. Then, click Save to optimize router settings for speed.
  • Step 10:Go to the Wireless Security settings under the Wireless section.
  • Step 11:Enable WPA/WPA2 - Personal and choose the Version as WPA2-PSK, and select Encryption as AES from the list. 
  • Step 12:After optimizing the router settings, your internet speed will be increased to the maximum level. 
  • Step 13:You can run a speed test to check the internet speed of your router.

Netgear router:

  • Step 1:Enter the IP address of the Netgear router in the address bar of your web browser to optimize router settings for speed.
  • Step 2:Enter the username and password of the network. If prompted, enter the admin password of your computer.
  • Step 3:Navigate to the Advanced section, and select the Setup option.
  • Step 4:Enter the Channel width for Wireless Network for 2.4GHz as “11,” and 5GHz as “44.”
  • Step 5:Download the Netgear Genie application on your computer or Smartphone from the official website of the Netgear router.
  • Step 6:Go to Router Settings and select the Router Update tan. Click Next to update the router to the latest firmware.
  • Step 7:Wait until the firmware gets updated and restart the router and computer.

Linksys router:

  • Step 1:Open the Web interface page of your router and log in to your account using the network credentials.
  • Step 2:Navigate to the Status page and check the devices which are connected to the network.
  • Step 3:Remove unknown devices from the list and select the Wireless tab. Go to the Wireless Security window, and change the router’s wireless username and password. Then, change the Security mode to WPA or WPA2 from the drop-down menu.
